Sister Arlene Oswald, OP (Sister Mary Mark) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope died on January 4, 2020 in Neptune, New Jersey. A sharing of memories and visitation was held on Thursday, December 22, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. This was excellent preparation for her next ministry at the Archdiocese of Chicago, where she served as director of ecumenical affairs and interreligious affairs. Her reputation for seriousness, however, did not squash her sense of humor she showed up at a community talent show in knickers and a hat, and played the harmonica. She volunteered at St. Barnabas Parish, Chicago, with the religious education program and at Visitation School, Chicago, as a tutor. She began teaching in 1933 in Indiana, and in her more than five decades as an educator and administrator moved to Kentucky, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. May she rest in peace. She served as assistant principal at St. Patrick, Rockford, IL; director of adult education at Sacred Heart Adult Education Center, Washington, DC; and teacher aide at St. Lucy, Long Beach, CA. Her story is woven into our Congregation story, which continues to unfold. She served as the adult education administrator at Sacred Heart Adult Education Center, Washington, DC; with the development staff specializing in donor relations at Mission of Our Lady of Mercy, Chicago; and as chaplain and tutor at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Rockford, IL. Sr. Denise, the daughter of Mary Rock and Andrew Macko, was born in Youngstown, OH on October 7, 1929. She was born on February 15, 1934, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio to Fred Emerson and Letha Fern Moran. She was curious and loved Scripture, reading, and being with her family. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 5 at Our Lady of the Elms Convent Chapel. A true Dominican, Sr. Denise loved to study. Sr. Denises interests were as wide as her ministry, ranging from needlework to winemaking to golf. She brought good news to others for a long lifetime. Per her request, Sister has been cremated. She returned to the Motherhouse to work with children in the preschool program and then used her computer skills as support staff at the Motherhouse in the Office of Development with the Honors and Memorials program; at Regina High School, Minneapolis, in the business office; and at St. Jude Convent, Montgomery, AL, as bookkeeper. After working for several years following high school graduation, she entered the Congregation in 1932, made her first profession in 1933, and took her final vows in 1936. Not content with teaching and serving her congregation, Sr. Denise also taught the metric system at the Summit County Society of the Blind and volunteered at Xavier Society for the Blind as a transcriber of Braille. Sr. Joan was one of six children born to Emma Goedicko and Joseph McGuire in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. She was a peace-filled spirit of joy. Sr. Vicki was an excellent and respected teacher. After retiring from education in 1985, Sr. Vincent joined the Congregations Finance team, where she built a reputation for being organized, conscientious, and absolutely dogged about the accuracy of the reports that she prepared. Sister Eldena (Marie Evan) Scholl, OP, died Aug. 5, 2022. Sr. Denise returned to study computer science at the University of Akron while teaching there as well. A native of nearby Zanesville, OH, Sr. Michaeleen was born to Laura Paul and Orville Henderson on June 24, 1931. As the century turned in 1999, so did Sr. Vincent, retiring from active ministry to volunteer in the Recycling Center at St. Catharines Dominican Earth Center. Sr. Loretta was curious, often seeking to understand the mystery of God and listening to others as they searched for meaning. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. When she was no longer able to go to the hospital on a regular basis, she continued to set up the monthly masses and functioned as a Eucharistic minister for as long as she was able. She served God and Gods church as a Dominican Sister for 72 years. She was very involved in establishing a covenant relationship between the Metropolitan Chicago Synod and the Archdiocese of Chicago and was recognized with the James Fitzgerald Award from CADEIO(Catholic Association of Diocesan Ecumenical and Interreligious Officers) in 2009. She later earned her STL (Licentiatein Sacred Theology) in Theology and her STD (Doctor of Sacred Theology) in Ecumenism from the Angelicum Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome.
